Name: Annam Cafe, Design Hotel Chennai by jüSTa

Location: Phoenix Marketcity Chennai, 142, Velachery Main Road, Chennai – 600042

Ambience: Located within the premises of Chennai’s most spacious and plush mall, Annam Cafe is the all-day dining space at the mall’s inhouse hotel – Design Hotel Chennai by jüSTa. The décor is a blend of contemporary designs from across the world and the rich traditional South Indian art forms. The light fixtures are inspired by Indian percussion instruments like the tabla and mridangam, but with a twist. Handpicked antiques pepper the shelves, and an open kitchen is the cynosure of all eyes.

What we ate: The menu is divided into two segments – an all-day dining menu and one that is available during lunch and dinner. The all-day menu is popular with inhouse guests, serving up Anytime Breakfast options (cereals, oats, eggs, hash browns, parathas, idlis and so on), soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers, wraps, pizzas, and finger foods. We decided to opt for the Lunch/Dinner menu though, which primarily serves up Indian fare. We started off with a glass of freshly squeezed watermelon juice and some assorted starters. Masala Broccoli, with the broccoli florets tossed in an Indian masala was our favourite, but the others weren’t far behind – Potato Kiev, Paneer Sticks and Nachos are some other hot-selling items off the menu.

Main course didn’t disappoint – Miloni Tarkari (mixed vegetables in yellow gravy), Diwani Handi (vegetables cooked in a rich onion cashew gravy), Bhindi Do Pyaaza (stir-fried okra in a mix of onions and Indian spices) and Paneer Makkai Korma (kurma gravy with paneer and corn) were served with assorted Indian breads – phulkas, tawa parathas and Malabar parathas. A small portion of Dal Palak (moong dal tadka with shredded spinach) was also served. For those of you who prefer rice to rotis, steamed rice and fried rice are available. For dessert, we dug into the Baked Yoghurt, an absolutely delicious combination of yoghurt, condensed milk and cream! We wound up our meal with a piping hot cup of green tea.

Price points: A meal for two would cost Rs 1,000 upwards, exclusive of taxes and alcohol.
