Bhangarh Fort

Uncovering the mystery behind Bhangarh Fort, a haunted place in Alwar, Rajasthan

Bhangarh Fort is part of Rajasthan tourism and draws tourists’ attention for its interesting, eerie story. Like other places with a tragic story behind them, this place also has a story to tell that has made it haunted. Delving into its history, this place was built in the 16th century during the reign of Raja Bhagwant Das for his second son, Madho Singh.

The fort was once a thriving palace adorned with vines and foliage. It also had stunning architecture and beautiful surroundings. As per belief, the fort was inhabited by 10,000 people before it turned into ruins. With a fusion of Rajput and Mughal styles, it had palaces, temples, and courtyards. The materials used to construct the fort included sandstone and marble with intricate carvings.

Legends behind the haunted fort

There are two stories that turned this once flourishing place into a spooky site.

One is related to princess Ratnavati and another is the curse of the tantrik.

  1. Princess Ratnavati

Princess Ratnavati was known for her beauty and had many admirers across the kingdom who wished to marry her. But apart from royal suitors, a wizard adept in black magic also fell in love with her. He became so obsessed with the princess that he wanted her at any cost. One day, he saw the princess going to the market with her friends to buy perfume (attar).

Seeing her, the wizard replaced the perfume with the love potion. But his trick failed when the princess knew the truth of his intention and threw the potion into the boulder that rolled towards the wizard, and killed him. But before dying, he cursed the palace would soon be destroyed and be bereft of human dwelling in its precincts.

  1. Tantrik curse

Another legend behind Bhangarh Fort’s deserted condition is the curse of Tantrik Guru Balu Nath. The hermit lived in a hut where he meditated. Once, the king approached him with a request to construct a fort near it.

The sage agreed to one condition: that its shadow should not touch his hut, to which the king also agreed. But he failed to keep his promise and faced the brunt of a hermit who cursed the city into turning into ruins.

Warning signs around Bhangarh Fort; What do they indicate?

Located 26.9 km from Sariska Tiger Reserve, Bhangarh Fort has grabbed tourists’ attention for its fascinating spooky tales. Some people may find it a myth, but warning signs indicate paranormal activities on the fort’s premises. So, visitors are told to leave before sunset.

There have been incidents of people’s loss and deaths here. Other than Indian tourists, no foreign national is allowed to visit the site. The government put a strict ban on foreigners as there have been cases of them getting lost in the area, plus flouting the rules.

Roofless houses that still marks the curse of the sage

One more interesting fact about Bhangarh Fort is the roofless houses. Yes, you heard it right. There are houses where you won’t see any roofs above them. This is correlated with the curse of Sage, which has its impact even today. Based on local belief, the roofs have failed to sustain and have collapsed shortly. People have even lost their lives because of it in the past.
