Chittorgarh Fort: A Towering Citadel Representing Rajput’s Valour And Chivalry

Chittorgarh

Chittorgarh Fort is a popular tourist spot in Chittorgarh and a declared heritage site in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list. Located on the banks of river Berach, a tributary of Banas, this rare architectural gem attracts people from not only India but also across the world. It is one of the largest forts known in India and is spread over an area of 700 hectares, this historic structure is a landmark in Chittorgarh, Rajasthan. It is also called Chittor Fort.

This fort is a must-visit for tourists because it houses many temples, historical palaces, gates, and two towers. It has 65 historic structures, including four palaces, nineteen large temples, 20 giant water bodies, four memorials, and two victory towers. The fort inspired the Bollywood movie Padmavat, based on Allauddin Khilji and his lust for Rajput queen Padmini. Let us bring you more interesting facts about this historical wonder.

Chittorgarh Fort: A legendary historical gem to visit in Chittorgarh

Located at a high altitude of 180 m and spreading over 700 acres, Chittorgarh Fort was a towering citadel of brave Rajput warriors, including Rana Kumbha, Gora, Badal, Jaimal, Patta, Rana Pratap, and others. It truly resonates with the tragic tales of Rajput glory and sacrifices made by women. It was sacked thrice, once by Alauddin Khilji in 1303, next by Bahadur Shah of Gujarat in 1535, and lastly by Mughal Emperor Akbar.

Chittorgarh is a land of brave kings and witnesses to women’s glory for their iconic deeds. These include Meerabai, who became a bhakti saint after leaving her royal life; Panna Dai, a nursemaid who sacrificed her son’s life to save Udai Singh II; and Rani Padmini, who performed Jauhar (an act of self-immolation) to save her modesty from Alauddin Khilji and his forces.

Housed tourist attractions

Chittorgarh Fort had many gates that were constructed as a fence against the enemy attack. These gates were named after mythological figures. The last and main gate was named Ram Pol, whereas the rest were named as Lakshman Pol, Hanuman Pol, Bhairon Pol, Ganesh Pol, Suraj Pol, Padan pol, and Jodla Pol. The fort houses other tourist attractions that include:

Rana Kumbha Palace

This palace of Rana Kumbha is one of the noted tourist spots admired for its architectural brilliance and historical plot. It is also the place where Rani Padmini committed jauhar with other women in its underground cellars.

Padmini Palace

Kalika Mata Temple

As the name clearly states, Kalika Mata Temple is dedicated to the goddess Kali.  But before it became a temple in her name, it was earlier a Sun temple, which was partly demolished at the time of the sacking of Chittorgarh.

Meera Temple

Meera Temple is a holy shrine dedicated to Meerabai, who became a bhakti saint praising the hymns of Lord Krishna. The ancient temple is appealing for its Indo-Aryan architecture and carved five human structures with one head, signifying people from all religions, communities, cultures,

Gaumukh Kund

Gaumukh Kund is a water reservoir named after the shape of a cow’s mouth from which the water flows. Devotees are said to visit this place when coming to Chittorgarh. The journey is incomplete without this tourist spot.
